Prop. 77 Support Not Myopic

Who is myopic?

Bob Evans wrote a letter ("Wake Up,” Saddleback Valley News, Letters, Sept. 30) in response to Michael Kennedy's earlier letter, which warned of the outcome of our legislature's caving in to the demands of the public employees' unions. Evans’ letter is a perfect example of what is wrong with our state.

Evans accuses Kennedy of being myopic (i.e., shortsighted). I accuse Evans of being both myopic and wearing blinders. Our state legislature could continue to grant to public employees guaranteed health and retirement benefits (as opposed to guaranteed contributions) far in excess of those offered in even the most lenient private companies. In order to pay for them, we would all soon be taxed out or our homes and businesses (which provide employment) and be forced to move out of state where it is easier to live and make a profit (or even stay in business). Check the statistics, Mr. Evans. It is already happening.

If the legislature continues to tax the highest income earners, how easy will it be for them to move out of the state or country? I say very easy. Kennedy has it right. Get a grip, Mr. Evans. Please go see an ophthalmologist to correct both your myopia and your blinder vision. I will be pleased to pay your ophthalmologist bills if you will pay my tax bills.
