MINUTES

Call to Order

A regular meeting of the Heritage Committee was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairperson Nancy Cho.

Committee members welcomed and introduced themselves to Commissioner Atkinson.

Consent Calendar

1.MV Heritage Committee Meeting Minutes – July2, 2008
Anna T. Boyce moved to approve the August meeting minutes. Motion seconded by Norman Syler. On roll call all present approved.

Old Business

2. .Library Report
Bette Lindsay reported the Library Local History Section had 24 visitors during the month of August.

3. .Heritage House
Nancy Cho acknowledged and thanked Florence Savage and Anna T. Boyce for their service as docents for the Heritage House. Anna T. Boyce reported she has been caring for the trees, watering and feeding. Nancy Cho reported she has received requests from 2 additional scout groups for future tours. Nancy Cho reported she will bring a tally of visitors to the house for the past two months.

Nancy Cho reported the float maquettes are on display at the Mission Viejo Library in the Heritage Room along with an image of the new design.

4. .Heritage Collection Scope of Work
Item tabled.

5. History Book
Committee members discussed reducing the price of the Heritage Book to make available to patrons.

Norman Syler moved to sell the book for $25 to non profit groups and retail to the public for $35 and that community patrons may purchase 10 or more to receive a quantity reduced price of $25. Motion seconded by Jan Macdonald. Unanimous. 

Commissioner Rich Atkinson reported he would be interested in purchasing 20 books to be sold at a meeting.

6. Historical Playing Cards
It was reported that 21 playing cards have been sold. Committee members were encouraged to assist with marketing the last 31 cards. Dru Maurer passed out names and phone numbers of service organizations that might be interested in purchasing a card. Dru Maurer suggested each committee member commit to selling 3 cards to community organizations to assist with completion of the project. Nancy Cho reported she will draft a letter to businesses, Joanne Hayden reported she would contact local schools, and Commissioner Atkinson reported he would make a pitch to the Orange County Firefighters Association. 

7. Rose Parade 2009
Dru Maurer passed out a rendering of the proposed float design. Committee members were encouraged to register to help with the float decorating days. Renee Beach reported the forms would be available on-line, in the Leisure Time, and as fliers at city venues.

Dru Maurer reported exhibits will be on display in the City of Mission Viejo Library, City Hall, and the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center.

Staff Report

Dru Maurer reported on the upcoming cultural arts events during the month of September.

Renee Beach reported the Mission Viejo Activities Committee will be hosting
the Santa’s Arrival celebration in the Kershaw Garden in the Civic Center, on Sunday, November 30, 2008. Committee members were encouraged to participate and host a booth with a special holiday craft project for families.

Committee Member Comments

Anna T. Boyce commended Nancy Cho for her leadership, dedication and service to the Heritage Committee.

Nancy Cho passed out a flier showcasing a Chamber of Commerce event at the Mission Hospital, scheduled for Wednesday, November 17, 2008.

Nancy Cho reported Saddleback College would be hosting a welcome reception for college president, Todd Burnett on Wednesday, November 17, 2008. Helen Workun reported she would attend on behalf of Nancy Cho.

Adjournment

At the hour of 7:30 p.m., there being no further business to come before the Committee, Norman Syler moved to adjourn the meeting. Motion seconded by JoAnn Hayden. The next scheduled meeting October 1, 2008 at 6:00 p.m at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center in the Lavendar Room.
