Primary Update

The race for Orange County Republican Central Committee has 22 candidates in the 73rd Assembly District (which includes Mission Viejo). The Central Committee is the policy-making body of the Republican Party of Orange County, and it’s also a work group. Its members support and build the party, register voters and get out the vote to elect Republicans.

The sheer number of candidates running for Central Committee should alert voters that something is up. This blog has previously covered the county-level power struggle in the Republican Party, with non-Republicans attempting to take control. It is crucial for voters to choose tried and true Republicans as their Central Committee representatives. The best choices in the 73rd are nearly all incumbents except Nancy Padberg, who was previously a Central Committee member. In the order their names appear on the ballot, they are Alice Anderson, Norm Dickinson, Tony Beall, Jon Fleischman, Nancy Padberg and Mary Young.

As a quick way to size up the overall validity of “voter guides,” look at the Central Committee list. (This does not refer to slate mailers in which candidates pay for listings. It means the personal recommendations that several South County activists send out, primarily by email.) If their recommendations don’t include Mary Young, something is wrong. Mary is Orange County’s No. 1 super-volunteer and workhorse for the Republican Party.

A legitimate list should also include Jon Fleischman, a former president of the California Republican Assembly. He’s a leader, strategist and a reliable conservative whose contributions are immeasurable.

Norm Dickinson heads county GOP precinct operations and does an outstanding job of training and organizing volunteers to Get Out The Vote. He’s a retired Navy officer, a genuine conservative and active in his church.

Tony Beall’s fight against union control of the Capo school district is legendary. He and his wife Jennifer were honored last year as Republican Volunteers of the Year.

These “big four” GOP leaders in the 73rd A.D. should be on every Republican voter guide. Voters should beware of any list that mixes candidates from the side supporting the Republican Party and the side opposing it. Either the list-makers are trying to fool the voter or they don’t know the candidates. The other two legitimate recommendations for six seats on the Central Committee should go to Alice Anderson and Nancy Padberg, who have earned their stripes as genuine conservatives and hard-working Republicans.

While it is one thing to circulate recommendations among friends, it is quite another to post them online with claims that candidates have been researched. Why would a conservative Republican voter guide tout a lieutenant of Frances Akhavi ( http://missionviejoca.org/html/article212.html )? The next campaign finance reporting period ends May 24 – follow the money.

To the credit of list-makers in south Orange County, none recommended any Central Committee candidates from the SOC912 cell. Maybe it was by chance, but the smell of stink bombs emanating from SOC912 is offensive even to bystanders.

On June 5, California could set a new record for low turnout in a Primary Election. On the positive side, Republicans could take advantage by getting their informed members to vote.

Obama Adds Golf Czar
Contributed by L.C.

President Obama has recently appointed a Golf Czar, and major rule changes in the game of golf will become effective Sept. 1, 2012. This is only a preview, as the complete rule book (expect 2000+ pages) is being rewritten as we speak. Here are a few of the changes.

Golfers with handicaps:

  • below 10 will have their green fees increased by 35 percent.
  • between 11 and 18 will see no increase in green fees.
  • above 18 will get a $20 check each time they play.

The term "gimmie" will be changed to "entitlement" and will be used as follows:

  • handicaps below 10, no entitlements.
  • handicaps from 11 to 17, entitlements for putter length putts.
  • handicaps above 18, if your ball is on green, no need to putt, just pick it up.

These entitlements are intended to bring about fairness and, most importantly, equality in scoring. In addition, a player will be limited to a maximum of one birdie or six pars in any given 18-hole round. Any excess must be given to those fellow players who have not yet scored a birdie or par. Only after all players have received a birdie or par from the player actually making the birdie or par, can that player begin to count his pars and birdies again. The current USGA handicap system will be used for the above purposes, but the term "net score" will be available only for scoring those players with handicaps of 18 and above.

These changes are intended to "re-distribute" the success of winning by making sure that in every competition, the above 18 handicap players will post only "net score" against every other player's "gross score.” These new rules are intended to "CHANGE" the game of golf. The president "HOPES" you all like it.

Golf must be about fairness. It should have nothing to do with ability, hard work, practice and responsibility. This is the "right thing to do."

The Buzz

Constituents of the Capo school district voted in 2010 to remove two reform members – Mike Winsten and Ken Maddox – from the board of trustees. The union-backed replacements gave the teachers union a majority on the board. The district is now $53 million in the red with bankruptcy looming. When Winsten and Maddox were still on the board, the district had a balanced budget. The Capo district is South County’s largest employer, and the impact of such irresponsible management is immense.

Information came out during the May 7 Mission Viejo council meeting about city finances. From last week’s Buzz: “The city’s bank account is upside down, with $9.4 million more in cash disbursements than cash receipts through the first three-quarters of the fiscal year.” That’s the latest word – no response from the city manager or city treasurer on this.

              ***

The California Primary on June 5 brings to mind the words of Dick Morris: “Democrats defeat Republicans, and Republicans defeat themselves.” It’s up to voters – focus on defeating Democrats this time.

The May 21 council meeting has a very light agenda, but it includes several items that watchdogs should monitor. Item #14 introduces an increase in trash fees, effective July 1. Under Old Business, look at Items #16 and #17 for the Tennis Resort. Also of interest under the Consent Calendar, review the Treasurer’s Monthly and Quarterly reports for various agencies.

Eric Eisenhammer sent an alert about defeating Prop 29. The Buzz contributors concur – vote no on 29. Eric writes, “The ‘Yes on 29’ campaign is getting more and more desperate as election day gets closer, and now they’re trying to make it look like the LA Times has endorsed them. The LA Times has not endorsed them. … the LA Times editorial board is opposed to Prop. 29, and the paper has officially recommended a No vote.” Eric suggests responding online, “Tell them if even the generally pro-tax LA Times recognizes Prop. 29 as a flawed measure with no accountability, it couldn’t possibly be a good idea. Kevin Jackson refers to the Mayans’ prediction of the end of civilization – they got it wrong. Kevin says, “I believe the Mayans weren't predicting the doom of civilization, but rather the doom for Liberalism. … Instead of the world ending on Dec 21, 2012, we get to celebrate our last CHRISTmas with Barack Hussein Obama. Further, for the foreseeable future, liberals will have to hear me yelling I TOLD YOU SO!" http://theblacksphere.net/
