Candidates Weren’t Vetted
Letter to the Editor

Another illustration pointing out that the Register got it wrong in their Mission Viejo city council recommendations. Part of their litmus test for endorsements was separation from organized labor contributions or endorsements.

In discussing their decision making in the city of Mission Viejo they acknowledged that Cathy Schlicht was squeaky clean in this area.

Quoting from their Oct 9 endorsement article they stated "Ms. Schlicht has not sought endorsement or campaign contributions from public employee unions."

Fast forward to last week when Cathy was hit with a slick $8,000 mailer. Checking the Citizens to Protect Mission Viejo PAC, their latest 496 reports an $8,000 expenditure for a hit piece mailer attacking MV council member Cathy Schlicht. Peeling the onion further you will see their latest form #496 reflecting a $5,000 contribution from the Orange County Professional Firefighters Association, $2,500 from OCTAX PAC and $1,000 from CREPAC. Mission Viejo councilman Frank Ury previously contributed $100 to this same PAC.

Amazing. Wendy Bucknum loses the GOP endorsement due in part to displaying a union provided yard sign at her home in a recent election, yet that detail is ignored due to a lack of proper candidate vetting.

PALs Update
by Julie Collier

Dear PALs,

The OC Register has an article that discusses what each side had paid into the election. The Register states the union and Children First have outspent its rival Hold CUSD Accountable. Both groups have different messaging. Candidates with Hold CUSD Accountable believe there is not enough focus on students in CUSD. However, representatives from Children First believe CUSD is doing just fine.

Fran Sdao of Mission Viejo, president of Children First, "They're harping on a lot of the same issues. What we've brought to the board are discussions at board meetings that are much, much, much more focused on education and instruction and positive outcomes. We're hoping that continues."

Please read the article below to decide for yourself. Capo district braces for contentious race; costs top $247,000

The saga continues regarding misleading websites and the CUSD school board campaign. The Patch broke the news that current CUSD trustee, John Alpay, registered for one of the misleading website domains.

Many of you have asked about the status of the misleading domains with my name and PAL's name. My attorney, Wayne Tate, asked Mr. Korpi to sign a declaration stating he was not the person who purchased the websites. As you may recall, Mr. Korpi stated he did not purchase the sites, and alluded to someone stealing his identity and purchased the sites in his name. Mr. Korpi had until Wednesday to sign the declaration stating he was not involved. My attorney did not get a signed declaration, and we are considering moving forward with further legal action. The other parents and leaders of www.holdcusdaccountable.org are also considering legal options.

CUSD Trustee Alpay Behind One of the Misleading Domain Names

John Alpay registered a website address that is similar in name to a group which is critical of him but continues to redirect traffic to a group which supports him. Alpay is running for re-election in November.

I was at the recent CUSD board meeting when a dad from San Clemente alleged that a trustee threatened him. Here is the article from the Patch including videos:

Capistrano Teacher Union Operative’s Story Hard to Swallow

Deceptive campaign websites point to CUEA front-group leader.
The Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) in California’s Orange County has seen more than its share of school board battles in recent years. In 2008, parent activists managed to rid themselves of possibly the most corrupt school board in America. Immortalized in Continue Reading

The Buzz

Email from Larry Gilbert, forwarded by a Mission Viejo watchdog: “It's bad enough to take thousands of dollars from developers to campaign for re-election but I think I've seen a first in our 24 years of cityhood. Mission Viejo Councilman Frank Ury must be desperate. He has stooped to a new low. His latest contribution filing shows his borrowing $1,000 from one of our city vendors whose annual contract Frank approved. Frank filed a late contribution report, form #497, which reflects receiving a $1,000 loan from Charles Townsend, President, Townsend Public Affairs, Laguna Hills, on Nov 1. Ironically, if your read or listen to Frank, he always mentions how stable our city coffers are when he can't even control his own election funds and resorts to borrowing money from a man whom Frank awarded a taxpayer-funded contract.”

              ***

Watchdogs intercepted emails from council candidates Frank Ury and Wendy Bucknum to their acquaintances, showing they are trying to raise thousands of dollars at the last minute. Panic-driven fundraising does not come across as confidence. Watchdogs don’t need to pay a pollster to gauge how Ury’s campaign is going. Throughout Ury’s campaign and especially during the past month, he’s been particularly surly, attacking anyone who disagrees with him.

              ***

City Hall propaganda is limited to positive news about the city but never about the need to improve. Watchdogs campaigning at storefronts get an earful from citizens, including criticism of the council majority and City Hall. A noticeable number of business owners say City Hall isn’t business friendly, and that includes complaints that the city offers services that compete with the private sector.

              ***

A Mission Viejo resident reported seeing a campaign sign Wendy Bucknum placed in a pet store. Bucknum says residents should vote for her if they want a dog park. Dog owners would have to wait for a long for the dog park Bucknum is talking about, which would run in excess of $1 million. Candidates Cathy Schlicht and Ed Sachs have proposed a temporary dog park, which could be built quickly at a relatively low cost.
