Pat Bates Bio

Pat Bates – Candidate for Orange County Supervisor, Fifth District

A History of Accomplishment for the People of Orange County and California:

Pat Bates is running for the office of Fifth District Supervisor because the residents of South Orange County need and deserve a strong voice and proven leader on the Board of Supervisors.

In addition to her extensive experience in community volunteer activities and as an elected official in local government, Pat Bates has a well-earned reputation as one of California’s most accomplished public servants. Pat was the driving force behind Laguna Niguel’s cityhood campaign and became the first Mayor upon the city’s incorporation in 1989. She served four terms as Mayor and continued serving as a City Council Member until her election to the State Assembly in 1998 – where she served three successful terms.

Pat’s role as a member of the city council provided her with many opportunities to serve the community on both a local and regional level, including as Chair of the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor Agency Board of Directors and Vice Chair of the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority (ETRPA) – the leading governmental entity in the 10-year fight against the El Toro airport.

In 1998, Pat ran for the State Assembly and was overwhelmingly elected by the people of the 73rd Assembly District. In the Assembly, she served as Vice Chair of the Assembly Appropriations and Assembly Health Committee, and was the founding Chair of the Republican Women’s Caucus – leading the Caucus’ outreach program to inspire women across California to become more involved in the development of public policy. While serving in the Assembly, Pat was appointed to the prestigious Little Hoover Commission, and Governor Schwarzenegger appointed her to serve on his historic California Performance Review Commission responsible for providing recommendations on reforming State Government and its operations.

In the Assembly, Pat was known as a genuine consensus builder, able to bring people together and get things done for the good of the state and her district. Working closely with city and county leaders, Pat successfully authored legislative measures broadening Orange County’s eligibility for vital transportation dollars and worked tirelessly to make our communities safer and more livable.

Credited by many of her colleagues with stopping all pro-airport legislation in Sacramento while she served in the State Assembly, there is no stronger advocate than Pat Bates for protecting our quality of life in South Orange County. If elected Supervisor, the valuable experience Pat gained in the state legislature and the strong relationships she has forged will benefit the County immeasurably.

Pat’s philosophy is simple – listen to the people you represent and don’t be afraid to take a stand. Her experience as an early leader in our successful fight to stop the El Toro airport taught her that dedicated people from all walks of life, working together, can overcome enormous odds and make a lasting difference for our communities, our families, and our future…
