Candidate for the Orange County Office of Supervisor

5th Supervisor District

Mayor Pro Tem Cathryn DeYoung is a native Californian with an extensive background in local government, having served on the Laguna Niguel City Council for the past 7 years, and as Mayor in 2000-2001. She also served on several Laguna Niguel committees, boards, and commissions, and was very active in the fight against El Toro airport. Cathryn is a director of the El Toro Reuse Planning Authority (ETRPA—the organization that helped defeat the El Toro airport).

Cathryn received her Juris Doctorate from Loyola Law School and is admitted to serve before the California State Bar, the United States District Court, the California Court of Appeal, as well as the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Cathryn started her career in government service as an Orange County Deputy District Attorney prosecuting various cases ranging from gang-related crimes in the Juvenile office to criminal trial work at the South Orange County Municipal Court.

Cathryn has experience at both the local and regional level on transportation issues where she served as a Director of the Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) representing the 5th District (South County). As a member of the OCTA Board, Cathryn

Served South Orange County’s interests by advocating for improvements in South Orange County’s roads and freeways. Cathryn was recently appointed to the Measure “M” Renewal Super Committee, where she will assist in the development of an investment plan to improve transportation in Orange County.

For the past six years, Cathryn served as the District 12 Regional Council Board Member to the Southern California Associates of Governments (SCAG), representing many of south Orange County’s cities on regional transportation and housing planning issues.

In 2004 Cathryn DeYoung was named “Woman of the Year” for her efforts in the 73rd Assembly District.

Cathryn DeYoung is running for 5th Supervisor, as the Honorable Tom Wilson vacates the seat in 2006 due to term limits. She has established herself as a front-runner in critical issues facing the County of Orange including the need to reform the County’s Pension system.
