Gov. Jerry Brown’s time is running out to get tax extensions on the ballot in June. County clerks throughout California say they need 88 days to prepare and mail election materials, find poll workers and comply with state laws. Current tax rates expire at the end of June, giving Brown only a few more days to call his plan “tax extensions” instead of “tax increases” on a ballot. If his bipartisan effort fails to set a special election anytime this summer, Brown on March 21 hinted he will consider initiatives for the November ballot instead. The process would involve a tight turnaround to get hundreds of thousands of signatures to qualify initiatives.
