Blog reader response: “While moving the farmers market to Saturday morning will compete with library hours, the parking situation might not be so bad because city hall is closed on Saturday. If you have ever tried to park near city hall, you might notice it has a lot of reserved spaces for city employees.”

During the Jan. 21 council discussion of electronic billboards, a familiar group showed up. In favor of billboards are the out-of-towners, who should call themselves the South County Trough-feeders Association (SCTA). Trough-feeder Roger Faubel is one of very few Mission Viejo residents supporting the billboards. Another of Faubel’s projects was Sunrise Development’s attempt to build high-density housing on the Casta del Sol Golf Course.

Mission Viejo has approximately 95,000 residents. Guess how many people have Mission Viejo library cards – 60,000 or 70,000? The total is a whopping 155,989, as of December 2012. Approximately 500 new cardholders are being added each month while the city’s population is standing still. A figure equally amazing is the total number of items in the library’s collection – 182,309. It is amazing because many smaller cities across the nation (note – not in California) have collections that are significantly larger. While quantity isn’t everything, the figures show Mission Viejo’s emphasis has never been its book collection.
