Kaleidoscope: the First Inning

During the Jan. 21 council meeting, Kaleidoscope’s representative promoted his plan for electronic billboards on the sides of the retail center. The topic unfolded as Agenda Item No. 19, amending the city’s sign code.

The biggest surprise was the council’s 4-1 vote against change. Councilman Frank Ury cast the lone vote in favor of changing the code to allow the billboards Kaleidoscope wants. No community member should conclude the matter has ended. While some developers prevail against the will of residents with one try, it often takes a public relations campaign, paid performers at the public microphone, campaign donations to wobbly council members and so on to wear down resistance in the community and get three council votes.

Given the lucrative business of electronic billboards, the community should expect the developer to return. Previous strategy by successful developers has included incremental steps. Kaleidoscope might next propose small electronic signs for tenants. After the signs are up, Kaleidoscope could then pressure council members to increase the number and size of signs or allow “just one” offsite advertiser.

As an aside, a defeated council candidate, Wendy Bucknum, took campaign donations from those associated with Kaleidoscope, and she has spoken in favor of electronic billboards. Although she lost her November 2012 bid for a council seat, she’s campaigning for her next run. She sent invitations last week for her fundraiser, to be held at – where else? – Kaleidoscope on Feb. 26.

ACT for America

The Mission Viejo Chapter of ACT for America will hold a general meeting on Mon., Feb. 11, at the Norm Murray Community Center in Mission Viejo. Doors open at 6:45 p.m., and the meeting starts promptly at 7:30 p.m.

Guest speaker Jamie Glazov’s topic will be “United in Hatred for America: The Left’s Dangerous Romance with Tyrants and Terrorists.” Glazov is the author and editor of Front Page online magazine.

From ACT for America’s announcement:

The Left's infatuation with militant Islam is a continuation of their love affair with twentieth century communist totalitarianism. The Left supported the brutal killing machines of Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro and other communist tyrants who murdered approximately 100 million of their own citizens. Now, "Progressives" are aiding and abetting homicidal Islamists around the globe and right here in America.

Both the radical Left and the Islamists possess a profound hatred for Western culture, for a capitalist economy that celebrates individual achievement, and for the Judeo-Christian values of the United States. Both seek to establish a new world order: leftists in the form of a secular communist society, and Islamists in the form of a caliphate ruled by sharia (Islamic law). To achieve these goals, both are willing to "wipe the slate clean" by means of massive death and destruction. Their ultimate fantasy is to build a worldwide utopia upon the ruins of the civilization they destroy.

Glazov will discuss:

  • What toxic beliefs and tortuous logic attract Leftists to tyrants and mass murders?
  • How the Left is actively abetting Islamic jihad against America and the West.
  • Obama's very real threat to values, rights and security of Americans.
  • The Left's deafening silence on the horrors of Islamic barbarity to women.

Glazov holds a Ph.D. in history with a specialty in Russian, U.S. and Canadian foreign policy. He is the author of the critically acclaimed and best-selling “United in Hate: The Left’s Romance with Tyranny and Terror.” His latest book is “High Noon for America: The Coming Showdown.” You can email him at jamieglazov11@gmail.com

Jamie will speak for approximately 50 minutes, followed by 20 minutes for questions. A $5 donation is appreciated to help cover meeting costs. The Community Center is located at 24932 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo. Note venue change, the Palo Verde Room.

The Buzz

Blog reader response: “While moving the farmers market to Saturday morning will compete with library hours, the parking situation might not be so bad because city hall is closed on Saturday. If you have ever tried to park near city hall, you might notice it has a lot of reserved spaces for city employees.”

During the Jan. 21 council discussion of electronic billboards, a familiar group showed up. In favor of billboards are the out-of-towners, who should call themselves the South County Trough-feeders Association (SCTA). Trough-feeder Roger Faubel is one of very few Mission Viejo residents supporting the billboards. Another of Faubel’s projects was Sunrise Development’s attempt to build high-density housing on the Casta del Sol Golf Course.

Mission Viejo has approximately 95,000 residents. Guess how many people have Mission Viejo library cards – 60,000 or 70,000? The total is a whopping 155,989, as of December 2012. Approximately 500 new cardholders are being added each month while the city’s population is standing still. A figure equally amazing is the total number of items in the library’s collection – 182,309. It is amazing because many smaller cities across the nation (note – not in California) have collections that are significantly larger. While quantity isn’t everything, the figures show Mission Viejo’s emphasis has never been its book collection.

Orly Taitz’s day in court is approaching. SCOTUS will hear her case on Feb. 15. Taitz’s claims include Barack Obama is using a last name not legally his, forged Selective Service application, forged long form and short form birth certificate and a Connecticut Social Security number 042-68-4425, which was never assigned to him according to E-Verify and SSNVS. Additionally, this case provides evidence of around 1.5 million invalid voter registrations in the state of California alone.
