Moorlach Gains Support
by Larry Gilbert

Although the 45th Congressional District may be a safe seat for Republicans in November, that does not ignore those times when we have contested Primary races. Having served as president of the Saddleback Republican Assembly for four years, where we interviewed many candidates from school board and city council to judges, California governor (2010) and members of Congress, I feel qualified to back up my endorsement of OC Board of Supervisor John Moorlach for Congress. I have known him over the past 20 years while he served as our appointed and then elected Treasurer/Tax Collector to his current position on the Board of Supervisors.

Before casting your Primary vote, ask yourself what is the biggest challenge facing America today? Our $17-trillion-dollar – and climbing – federal debt. Which of the 45th CD candidates is best qualified to understand and articulate a message and convince peers on the answer to turn that rudderless battleship around? Congress needs representatives who understand and have succeeded in handling billions in public funds. CPA John Moorlach has been there and has walked the talk beginning with "predicting the largest municipal bond portfolio loss and bankruptcy in U.S. history." John is recognized as a "leading expert on municipal bankruptcies." He took a lead role, supported by his BOS peers, in getting Orange County finances back on track. Earlier this year we read that "based on a recovering local economy and “very strong” management practices led to a recent upgrade to the County’s creditworthiness by national rating agency Standard & Poor’s. We need another voice inside the beltway that can detect and expose federal government waste and abuse.

In defining his decision to run for this seat, John stated the following: "I have built a strong and lengthy resume that displays a history of wanting to detect and correct poor governmental fiscal stewardship. The second is that this nation is heading in the wrong direction--with government broke at nearly every level. And, third, and most importantly, I believe that there are sufficient numbers of voters in the District who believe that I can make a difference in Washington, D.C., and want to see me there to use my proven skill sets to improve our country."

Readers. A group of us met with John on Wednesday evening [Feb. 26] where he fielded questions for over an hour. He is the real deal. What you see and hear is what you can expect. That is why I strongly urge all of my friends in the 45th to cast their vote for John in this year's election. The 45th includes all of Mission Viejo, RSM, Coto, Lake Forest, Irvine, Villa Park and parts of Anaheim Hills and Tustin.

ACT! for America Meets

The Mission Viejo Chapter of ACT! for America will meet on Mon., Mar. 10. Doors open at 7:00 p.m., and the meeting starts promptly at 7:30 p.m. The location is the Norman P. Murray Community Center, Sycamore B Room, 24932 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo.

The topic of the program will be “How Islam’s Glorification in Our Textbooks Threatens Our Liberty: One Activist’s Mission to Preserve Truth, Equality and Fairness in Our Classrooms.” The guest speaker will be David Whitley, who is an author and a conservative political activist. Members are invited to bring friends.

From the announcement sent by Chapter Leader Bruce Mayall:

David Whitley knows that our freedom to pursue success and happiness will only be preserved if it is zealously guarded by virtuous and vigilant citizens. He joined ACT! for America because he is committed to preserving our values, liberties and security.

David will share his personal experiences, insights, and struggles fighting the forces of tyranny, oppression and inequality—that are being glorified in our classrooms. He recently made a presentation to his child's PTA after discovering the whitewashing, omissions, and half-truths that masquerade as the history of Islam in our schools' textbooks. As a father he is especially concerned with the misrepresentation of Islam as a benign "religion of peace" to younger generations.

What you will learn:

  • What the textbooks say about Islam's history and why that threatens our liberties and security
  • How the PTA responded to David's presentation on the whitewashing of Islam in the textbooks
  • What to say to open minds and win hearts of the politicians and administrators
  • How to wake up others to the Political Islam's threat to our liberties and rights

David Whitley, a student of history, politics and religion, is a defender of Western Civilization, America, our Founding Fathers, our Constitution, and the principles of liberty on which America was founded. He is the editor and publisher of The Conservative Directory - The Little Black Book of the Cultural Counter Revolution. David is a political activist having worked in three national presidential campaigns canvasing precincts and training groups of volunteers as county co-coordinator in California and Iowa for Patrick J. Buchanan (1992, 1996, 2000).

David has been interviewed on KABC radio in Los Angeles as well as having appeared on CSPAN. He has been published in the Orange County Register and online at www.AmericanThinker.com and he is a regular contributor at www.EagleRising.com . He will speak for about 45 minutes. Then he'll answer questions for about 20 minutes. A $5 donation is appreciated to help cover meeting costs. Sign up for ACT! for America chapter announcements at www.act4oc.org

The Buzz

Posted on the Voice of OC by Norberto Santana Jr.: Toll roads CEO Neil Peterson “has been placed on administrative leave following a series of controversies at Orange County’s main toll road agency. TCA Chief Engineer Mike Kraman will replace Peterson, who took the helm of the embattled agency last summer on an interim basis, said TCA spokeswoman Lisa Telles. She confirmed the personnel action against Peterson late Friday, saying it was authorized earlier this week during a closed session.” Read more at http://www.voiceofoc.org/county/article_14aab0a4-a0de-11e3-8ebc-0019bb2963f4.html?mode=jqm

The reference in last week’s Buzz to Councilwoman Rhonda Reardon’s meltdown during the Feb. 17 council meeting drew a lot of attention ( http://missionviejo.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=12&clip_id=1296  , starting at 4:15 in the video). The reaction came after Councilwoman Cathy Schlicht asked for an assessment of the city’s gross overspending on a wheelchair tennis tournament that was supposed to be a privately funded operation with corporate sponsors. Reardon said that such questions about fiscal accountability “insult” the tennis players. Reardon also said, given a choice, she would take city employee Cheryl Dyas’ word over that of Councilwoman Cathy Schlicht regarding the city’s financial records

              ***

Reardon has challenged Councilwoman Schlicht before, and it has come back to bite her. For example, on Aug. 20, 2012, Reardon said she believed City Attorney Bill Curley when he advised there would be no negative financial impact to residents if the council placed thousands of homes in “special” fire zones (high-risk fire hazard zones). Curley was wrong. Councilwoman Cathy Schlicht said home sellers would have to disclose if they were in a fire zone, and insurance rates could rise. Following the council majority’s decision to rezone, the legal counsel for the California Association of Realtors indicated that home sellers and their real estate agents are obligated to disclose that a home is in a high-risk zone (or “Special” zone – the terms are interchangeable). Two months ago, Councilman Dave Leckness revealed an insurance agent’s warning to homeowners: don’t let your insurance payments lapse if you live in a fire zone because your insurance can be canceled. http://www.missionviejoca.org/html/article2103.html

              ***

Given what is known today – residents are indeed negatively impacted – view the video about the fire maps to hear Councilmembers Reardon, Kelley and Ury give wrong information: http://missionviejo.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=12&clip_id=816 , starting at 4:34. The city attorney is blathering about fire maps and says the “special” fire zones and the high-risk fire zones are NOT interchangeable – he is wrong. He refers to Trish Kelley and Reardon’s brilliance of putting thousands of MV homes into the zones as a “miracle” – which is nonsense. During public comments, Stephen Wontrobski, a Mission Viejo attorney, disagreed with the city attorney’s statements and interpretations regarding the fire zones. Now – 19 months later – it is abundantly clear both Councilwoman Schlicht and Mr. Wontrobski were right. Another topic Wontrobski has been right about is that the city should go out for bids on a new city attorney.

              ***

Councilwoman Reardon goes off during the Aug. 20, 2012, meeting, challenging Councilwoman Schlicht: http://missionviejo.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=12&clip_id=816 starting at 4:57 on the video. Reardon continues – foot in mouth – at 5:04 and 5:13.

              ***

At each meeting, Councilwoman Schlicht comes prepared, having researched the items instead of relying on staff reports and opinions from highly compensated advisors. The other four council members don’t do their homework. Residents are being severely short-changed on the performance of Reardon, Kelley, Leckness and Ury
