Myth vs. Truth
by Ed Sachs, excerpt from Oct. 19 Newsletter

The "making it up as you go along campaign strategy" relies heavily upon an uninformed resident population. Please make certain your friends do not fall into this category. This past week I attended one debate and a meet & greet at a private home, both events attended by Frank Ury. We find a lot of fact checking in the Presidential debates, so I thought I would provide my own “Myth vs. Truth” coming from these two events.

Myth: Ury claims that the tennis center was not over budget, but that when the council originally looked at the need to update the facility, they decided rather than piecemeal the project, it would be best to do everything needed at once. If they did projects separately, costs would go up the longer they waited to add to the project.

Truth: If the myth were true, then why was the budget approved originally for less than $2M, and then changed to $2.7M, and later necessitated 6 change orders including the last change order for just under $500,000 for irrigation and landscaping? If what Mr. Ury said was truth then why did we not have one capital improvement project for $5,000,000?

Myth: City Council voted down the Kaleidoscope proposal for electronic billboards and the issue is dead.

Truth: City staff was directed by Mayor Ury to bring back to council ideas on updating the city’s sign ordinance. Staff was also instructed to include electronic billboards in the proposal for discussion. Ury and Bucknum both are taking campaign contributions from outside influences (Bucknum $9,000 from one special interest group alone), many desirous of erecting the electronic billboards in order to sell advertising. What can you imagine the expectation of these contributors to be?

Here Frank Ury comments to a group of residents during a meet & greet at a resident’s home Saturday October 13th.

Myth: He was asked would we have a dog park and if so, when will it be completed? His answer was yes we have the property and we have done a land swap with the country to make it a better site next to the baseball fields. We will have the park completed before the end of summer 2013.

Truth: The cost to simply grade out the land is over $850,000. Add in fencing, parking, lighting, irrigation and landscaping and you are close to $2,000,000. I guess that he believes he does not need a council vote to get this done, or he already is so sure of the other two votes that allow him to make this statement. My plan is less than $300,000 for fencing in an existing Mission Viejo park.

Myth: The city has $23M in reserves (52%) that we can use for anything we want.

Truth: The city reserves are mostly accounted for through encumbrances and assignments to different budgets. In 2007 we had 75% in reserves. When I challenged the mayor on this, he told me those budget assignments are just to keep Sacramento from dipping into our budgets. So the mayor admits to playing games with the budget and he does not take budgeting seriously. It would not take a lot of investigation to notice historical use of our reserves for Sacramento to debunk this budgeting ruse.

PALs Update
by Julie Collier

Dear PALs,

As stated before, I cannot thank all of you enough for your words of support for all parents trying to do what is right for our children. You are amazing advocates for your children. I hope you never back down.

My attorney, Wayne Tate, received an email from Go Daddy that apparently identified Chris Korpi (through his Korpi Marketing Services) as the registrant for the websites with my name and our organization’s name. Mr. Korpi is known as one of the volunteers and/or leaders of Capistrano Unified Children First that are supporters of candidates for CUSD school board. I have heard him speak at a few board meetings. Needless to say, I was shocked to hear the news that someone so close to a campaign for our school board election was connected to this.

Our CUSD school board election has taken yet another bad turn with these latest events. Regardless of who did this, it is wrong and should never be acceptable in an election of any kind, least of all where candidates are being voted to support the education and future of children. Parents have a right to stand up and be a voice for their children without the fear of retribution. In fact, it is our obligation, as parents, to be a voice for our children, and we deserve to be heard. Teachers have their unions. Students have their parents.

You can read the article in The Patch. This article has the letter to Mr. Tate from Go Daddy along with Mr. Korpi’s response. Deceptive Campaign Websites Tied to Children First Volunteer

In another article from The Patch you can read about the money being spent by the teachers’ union and other campaigns for the CUSD school board race. More than $100K Spent in CUSD Races

I hope you all take time to research every candidate for school board, including voting records and behavior toward the public. When you have made your choice, share it with others or on Parents Advocate League Facebook page. www.facebook.com/ParentsAdvocateLeaguePALs

All the best,
Julie Collier

Let the voter beware -- Mission Viejo council candidates Frank Ury and Wendy Bucknum are the poster boy and girl for special interest. Last week, the out-of-town backers of Bucknum sent a nasty mailer to Mission Viejo residents to mock Councilwoman Cathy Schlicht for her concern for public safety. Voters who received it said it was a ridiculous personal attack on the one council member who is looking out for taxpayers and the safety of all residents. One of them said, “Rather than a comment about Cathy, the hit piece was an indictment of its author.”

              ***

A union supporter created a bogus website to undermine a volunteer group, Parents Advocate League. PALs director Julie Collier sent a message last week about the attacks against her group and a conservative Capo school board candidate, Bill Perkins. She wrote, “In addition to having misleading websites of my name and PAL, there were also other websites created of another outspoken mom in the district and another candidate for CUSD school board, Bill Perkins. You can read more in the SJC Patch article: http://sanjuancapistrano.patch.com/articles/misleading-web-addresses-have-a-cusd-candidate-critics-up-in-arms  I am hopeful the people involved will do the right thing and take down these bogus websites.”

              ***

Awareness is growing among voters that council candidate Wendy Bucknum is a professional lobbyist in the housing industry. Her list of so-called endorsements is her employer’s client list as well – elected officials who sell their votes. Here’s a second opinion: http://missionviejodispatch.com/politics/dispatch-endorses-council-candidates/

              ***

Following outrageous behavior by the Santa Margarita Water District directors, Mission Viejo residents said dump the incumbents http://www.missionviejoca.org/html/article225.html . As the lead agency, SMWD directors in July unanimously approved the Cadiz proposal to transport water from the Mojave Desert. Mission Viejo Tea Party Patriots, whose voter recommendations are published on this blog, do not support the incumbents. The problem is finding three decent candidates for the three seats at stake in this election. Last week, the Tea Partiers removed Charles “Chuck” Gibson for their recommendations after Gibson referred to Roger Faubel as his “close friend.” Faubel is a current SMWD director.

              ***

Frank Ury again tried to fool residents about electronic billboards during the Oct. 15 council meetings. However, the truth became even more obvious – the council majority of Ury-Kelley-Leckness previously voted in support of pursuing the electronic billboards idea, and the developer and city staff have been meeting behind closed doors. On Oct. 15, Kelley stated she and Leckness are “neutral” despite their votes in June. With the council majority, “neutral” evidently means they haven’t yet received their checks from the developer. Ury and Bucknum have received their checks, and they are not neutral. Developers will get rich quick, to the detriment of property values of those who live nearby and the safety of drivers. One of the proposed sites for the billboards is along the I-5 from Avery to La Paz – a particularly dangerous stretch of freeway.
