Response to Councilman John Paul Ledesma’s article about the council’s decision to approve UDR/Pacific’s housing proposal (former Kmart site)

Below you will note an editorial subject called Electeds’ Point of View. This is an opportunity for elected officials to explain their motives for a vote on a topic discussed in a previous NewsBlog opinion. If they choose NOT to explain their vote, then it is a fair assumption that they are voting their “campaign contributions.”

During the elections, we will provide FREE space to the candidates to answer pertinent questions and to express their views, provided that they renounce contributions from special interest groups.

Good News Department

The City of Mission Viejo has many ”Points of Light” ranging from city-sponsored events to individual accomplishments of our citizens. The city’s website does a good job of informing us about these “Points of Light.” Click on http://cityofmissionviejo.org/news/index.html for the details.

Opinion Letters

Joint Use Gymnasium and Setting Priorities

I fully expected that the $33 million in the general reserve account was at least partially spoken for, and while I've now read your list, I'm curious as to how many of these 'buckets” are cast in concrete

Gymnasium Finance Gyrations

Mission Viejo did not receive its grant for the gymnasium at Newhart Middle School from the State of California. As a result, our council showed fiscal responsibility to the citizens of Mission Viejo. By a three-to-two vote, Council Members Reavis, Ury and Ledesma came through for the citizens of Mission Viejo. For the rest of this letter, Click on

Proposition 73 Position

The opponents of the reform propositions are cleverly conducting an IQ test on the voting public. A letter in the Orange County Register ("Oppose Prop. 73: Student safety is at stake," Letters 10/25) is an example. The writer, a school nurse, states that in 15 years as a school nurse, she has never known of a school nurse who helped a student obtain an abortion without parental knowledge. Why, then, is she opposed to the proposition? It's not a problem!

Regional Issues affecting Mission Viejo

As you probably know, the Orange County Board of Supervisors Fifth District seat will be vacant as of December 2006 when Tom Wilson reaches the end of his term limits. Having a strong advocate for South County is crucial, as was evident in winning the fight against the proposed El Toro International Airport. Without an effective Supervisor at that time, we would have 747s flying over us today.

Here, we present the biographies of the two leading candidates for your information. We will continue to present their views on the important issues as we approach the November 2006 election.
