The Buzz
The “No on D” campaign has attempted to confuse voters into voting “no” or not voting at all. At a storefront last week, Geoff Willis (who says he’s the co-chair of No on D) attempted to convince several shoppers that Measure D would be ineffective in preserving the Casta del Golf Course. That’s wrong. By approving Measure D, voters could prevent a housing developer from building on the golf course. The developer (not taxpayers) would have to cover the cost of an election to ask for the zone change.
Residents know a childish trick when they see it. “No on D” supporters are placing their signs directly in front of the “YES on D” signs. On Saturday morning (June 5), “YES” signs along Marguerite Parkway from Felipe to Avery were either blocked or vandalized. A blog reader emailed, “Those opposing Measure D are letting us know who and what they are. Seeing the destruction in their wake tells me about their character.”
While residents frequently endorse one side or another, it’s a different matter to put one’s title on it. An example is Casta del Sol resident Joyce Saltzgiver endorsing “No on D” as a board member of the Casta homeowners association. Casta residents say she has no authority to speak for the board or its homeowners. It will be up to the members to deal with Saltzgiver if she runs for reelection on the HOA board. A Casta resident remarked, “Almost anyone can get on the board because most of us either don’t have time or don’t want to serve on the board. It opens the door to the abuse when dishonest homeowners can get on the board so easily and then use their title for politics.”
Here’s an example of how Councilman Frank Ury twists the truth. When talking with a dad whose son participates in sports, Ury told him to vote “no” on D to keep the sports fields zoned for recreation. That is precisely backwards! To protect the current zoning and preserve the Master Plan (including recreation and open space), vote YES on Measure D. Again, any major zone change would require a vote of the people.
Here it is again – for those asking who to support for GOP Central Committee in Mission Viejo (71st Assembly District). Vote for all six of the incumbents: Mark Bucher, Tony Beall, Todd Spitzer, John Williams, Jack Anderson and Marcia Gilcrist. The incumbents are doing a good job, which is a rare occurrence in government today.
The Mission Viejo Chapter of ACT for America will meet on Mon., June 14. Chapter leader Bruce Mayall invites members to bring a friend and arrive early. The group meets at the Community Center, 24932 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo (Sycamore B room). Doors open at 7 p.m., and the meeting runs from 7:30 to 9:30.
